Stoney's beer to be brewed in former Rolling Rock plant

The production of Stoney's and Stoney's Light beer is returning to a Westmoreland County brewery, but it will be in the former Rolling Rock brewery in Latrobe, not the old Jones Brewing Co. in Smithton, CEO Sandy Podlucky said Thursday.

"We're looking to increase production and sales. The sales are steady. There's an allegiance to that beer," said Podlucky, who took over Jones Brewing following the death of her husband, Gabriel M. Podlucky, in January 2006.

Bottling of the two Stoney's brands is scheduled to begin Tuesday at City Brewing Co.'s brewery, where Rolling Rock was brewed until July 2006. She declined to reveal terms of the contract, in which City Brewing charges the brand owner a fee for every case produced.

Makers of Stoney's beer celebrate centennial in Smithton

The makers of Stoney's beer celebrated their centennial yesterday at the old brewery in Smithton, Westmoreland County, with an afternoon of memorabilia, food and, of course, beer.

The memories -- in the form of collectible cans, calendars and other "breweriana" -- were still sweet. And no one complained about the familiar taste of the beer.

And yet there was still a hint of bitterness. Not in the beer, mind you, but among some of the people who stopped in to the celebration in the former brewery's parking lot on Second Street, along the Youghiogheny River.

Stoney's Marks 100 Years

The tradition lives on in the Mid-Mon Valley

SMITHTON - The beer is now produced in Pittsburgh, but the Jones Brewing tradition lives on in the Mid-Mon Valley.

And a century of brewing begun in Smithton will be celebrated this weekend where it all began - and continues on.

A Beer Collectibles Show will be held 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on the brewery premises.

This event, open to the public, will feature table displays of various brewery memorabilia such as signs, trays, bottles, cans, tap knobs and other types of beer advertising for buy, sell or trade.

The Pittsburgh-based Olde Frothingslosh Chapter of the Brewery Collectors Club of America is sponsoring the event. The gathering will take place on the Jones Brewing parking lot in Smithton under a tent, rain or shine. In addition to the merchan-dise, food, beverages and a raffle of beer items will be featured.

Jones Brewing produced its products -- such as Stoney's, Esquire, Fort Pitt and Gold Crown brands -- in Smithton until 2002 when brewing operations ceased. Since then, these products have been brewed at Pittsburgh Brewing Company.

The sales force, administrative offices and gift shop still remain in Smithton. About 15,000 barrels are produced annually at Pittsburgh brewing, said Sandy Podlucky, who took over ownership of Jones Brewing after her husband Gabriel "Gabby" Podlucky lost his battle with cancer last year.

That is down considerably from when the products were made in Smithton, but it is growing steadily in recent years, Podlucky said.

Jones Brewing had even ventured overseas in the final years of brewing in Smithton, but the current emphasis is on marketing and distribution in the tri-state area, Podlucky said.

"Our objective is to make it strong here and then move out into other areas," she said.

The brewery is "holding its own" because of faithful Stoney's drinkers, Podlucky said.

"They've stuck by us and we can't thank them enough," Podlucky said.

Podlucky said the management of Jones Brewing is happy with the continued growth. "To be 100 years old and still here is a feat in of itself," Podlucky said.
