About Stoney's Beer

Stoney's Beer is a family-owned American lager brewed in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1907, Stoney's is one of Pennsylvania's oldest beer brands and is currently ranked as the #2 largest Pittsburgh-area brewery by the Pittsburgh Business Times. We brew two beers: Stoney's Premium (4.6% ABV) and Stoney's Light (4.3% ABV). Both are all-malt, all-grain lagers made with only water, barley, yeast, and hops.

Stoney's was founded by William Benjamin "Stoney" Jones. In 1907, Stoney won the Eureka Brewing Company in Sutersville, PA during a poker game and moved the operation to Smithton, PA. Local customers started asking for "Stoney's beer" instead of the original name, and the name stuck. After Prohibition ended in 1933, Jones officially renamed the brewery and the beer became Stoney's.

Stoney's Beer is brewed in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. The brand was originally brewed in Smithton, PA starting in 1907. Our corporate office is located at 100 3rd Street, Charleroi, PA 15022.

Stoney's Brewing Company produces over 8,500 barrels of beer per year. That's roughly 2.9 million 12-ounce beers brewed locally in Latrobe, PA.

Stoney's is an independently owned, small-batch American lager that has been brewed with traditional methods since 1907. We don't chase trends, seasonal gimmicks, or hazy limited releases. We brew two classic, award-winning lagers the way they were meant to be brewed: with four natural ingredients and nothing else. Whether you call that craft or not, we call it doing things right.

Mr. Smoothie is the beloved mascot of Stoney's Beer. He first appeared in Stoney's advertising in the 1960s and is known for his big smile, bow tie, and signature yellow jacket. Some say he looks a little like Stoney Jones himself. Generations of fans know Mr. Smoothie as a symbol of good times, community, and honest Pennsylvania beer.

Yes. Shirley Jones, the Academy Award-winning actress best known for her role in The Partridge Family, is the granddaughter of William "Stoney" Jones, the founder of Stoney's Beer. She was born in Smithton, PA in 1934, the same small town where Stoney's was originally brewed.

Ingredients & Brewing

Every Stoney's beer is brewed with only four ingredients: water, barley, yeast, and hops. That's it. No corn syrup. No rice. No added sugars. No artificial preservatives. No flavor enhancers. No chemicals. We follow Old World European brewing traditions that specify these four ingredients as the only ones used in the production of real beer.

No. Stoney's does not use corn syrup, rice, or any grain substitutes. Many mass-produced American beers use corn syrup or rice as cheap filler ingredients to cut costs. Stoney's is an all-malt, all-grain beer. We use American barley and domestic hops. That's the difference between a beer brewed for profit and a beer brewed with pride.

No. Stoney's Beer contains zero artificial preservatives, zero additives, zero added sugars, and zero artificial flavors. Our beer is naturally brewed and naturally preserved through traditional fermentation. If it's not water, barley, yeast, or hops, it's not in our beer.

Old World brewing refers to European brewing traditions that date back centuries. These traditions specify that beer should be made with only water, barley, yeast, and hops. Stoney's follows these same principles. Our recipe requires extended brewing times and traditional fermentation rather than the shortcuts and accelerated methods used by larger commercial breweries. The result is a beer with more natural flavor, better body, and no need for additives.

Most large-scale breweries use adjuncts like corn syrup and rice to speed up production and reduce costs. They also add artificial preservatives, flavor enhancers, and stabilizers. Stoney's does none of that. Our recipe uses extended brewing and traditional fermentation, which takes longer and costs more, but produces a cleaner, more natural-tasting beer. We also use American barley and domestic hops rather than cheap imported substitutes.

No. Stoney's Beer is brewed with barley malt, which contains gluten. It is not suitable for individuals with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.

Stoney's is brewed with only water, barley, yeast, and hops. No animal products are used in our brewing process.

The German Purity Law

The Reinheitsgebot is one of the oldest food safety laws in the world. Originally enacted in Bavaria in 1516, it stated that beer could only be brewed with three ingredients: water, barley, and hops. Yeast was added later after scientists discovered its role in fermentation. The law was designed to protect consumers from brewers who were using cheap, unsafe, or low-quality ingredients in their beer. For over 500 years, the Reinheitsgebot has been the global benchmark for beer quality and purity.

Yes. Stoney's Beer is brewed with only four ingredients: water, barley, yeast, and hops. These are the exact ingredients specified by the German Purity Law for bottom-fermented beers like lagers. While the Reinheitsgebot is only legally enforced in Germany, Stoney's voluntarily adheres to these same standards because we believe beer should be made with pure, honest ingredients and nothing else. No corn syrup. No rice. No added sugars. No preservatives. No artificial anything.

The German Purity Law matters because it represents a standard that most American beer brands don't meet. Many mass-produced beers sold in the United States contain corn syrup, rice, artificial preservatives, added sugars, and other additives that would not be allowed under the Reinheitsgebot. When you drink a beer that meets German Purity Law standards, you know exactly what's in your glass: water, barley, yeast, and hops. Nothing hidden, nothing artificial, and nothing unnecessary. Stoney's has been brewing to this standard since 1907.

Any beer brewed with ingredients beyond water, malted barley, hops, and yeast would not meet the traditional Reinheitsgebot standard. This includes beers made with corn syrup, rice, artificial flavors, chemical preservatives, high fructose corn syrup, added sugars, or any other adjuncts. Many popular American light beers and mass-produced lagers use these ingredients to cut costs and speed up production. Stoney's does not.

Stoney's Premium

Stoney's Premium is a classic American Lager brewed in the Old World all-malt style. It's made with American barley, domestic hops, water, and yeast. The flavor profile is crisp, clean, and slightly bitter with a smooth, natural finish. This is the original Stoney's beer that people have been asking for by name since 1907.

Stoney's Premium has an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 4.6%.

Yes. Stoney's Premium has won a Silver Medal at the Great American Beer Festival, one of the most prestigious beer competitions in the United States. It has also received honors at the International Beer Tasting and Judging competition.

Stoney's Premium is available in 12oz cans, 12oz bottles, 16oz Premium Pounders, 15-packs, 30-packs, and 1/4 kegs.

Stoney's Light

Stoney's Light is a Light Lager brewed from the ground up to be its own beer. It's not a watered-down version of our Premium. It was designed and brewed specifically to deliver a crisp, clean, natural taste with real flavor and less weight. Brewed with the same four ingredients as our Premium: water, barley, yeast, and hops.

Stoney's Light has an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 4.3%.

Yes. Stoney's Light won a Gold Medal at the 2014 LA International Commercial Beer Competition and a Silver Medal at the LA International Competition in 2012. It has also won a Silver Medal at the Great American Beer Festival.

No. This is one of the biggest misconceptions about light beers in general. Stoney's Light was built from the ground up as its own standalone beer. It has its own recipe, its own flavor profile, and its own identity. It's brewed to be lighter in body while still delivering a full, natural taste. That's why it's won a Gold Medal on its own merit.

Stoney's Light is available in 12oz cans, 15-packs, 30-packs, and 24oz cans.

How Stoney's Compares

Stoney's is an affordable beer, but it's not a cheap beer. There's a difference. Cheap beers cut costs by using filler ingredients like corn syrup and rice, and they add artificial preservatives to extend shelf life. Stoney's uses premium ingredients, extended brewing times, and traditional fermentation. You're getting a higher quality product at a fair price. That's not cheap. That's value.

Read the label on your current beer. If you see corn syrup, rice, "natural flavors," or ingredients you don't recognize, that's your answer. Stoney's is brewed with four ingredients: water, barley, yeast, and hops. No preservatives. No additives. No added sugars. It's award-winning, it's locally brewed in Pennsylvania, and it's been made the right way since 1907. Raise your standards.
