National Beer Day: What It Is, Why It Matters, and How Stoney’s Beer Is Raising a Toast
Every April 7th, beer lovers across the country raise a glass to celebrate National Beer Day, but how did it all begin, and why does it matter today? At Stoney’s Brewing Company, we believe in tradition, community, and honoring the history behind the beer. Here’s what you need to know about this uniquely American celebration and how we’re keeping the spirit alive, one beer at a time.
What Is National Beer Day?
National Beer Day marks the date in 1933 when the Cullen–Harrison Act went into effect, legalizing the sale and consumption of beer with up to 3.2% alcohol by weight. It was the first major step in ending Prohibition. When President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the act, he famously said, “I think this would be a good time for a beer.”
Americans agreed. On April 7, 1933, an estimated 1.5 million barrels of beer were consumed across the country. It was more than a party—it was a return to normalcy, community, and culture.
Where Did National Beer Day Start?
The modern celebration of National Beer Day began in 2009 when a group of friends in Virginia decided the date deserved more recognition. They created a Facebook group to spread awareness, and before long, people across the country were toasting with #NationalBeerDay each April.
It may not be a federally recognized holiday, but that hasn’t stopped bars, breweries, and beer drinkers from treating it like one.
How to Celebrate National Beer Day
There’s no single way to mark the occasion, but if you’re looking to honor National Beer Day the right way, here are a few ideas:
Visit your favorite local brewery or bar.
Try a new style of beer! Maybe a Stoney’s?
Host a tasting at home with friends and compare notes.
Fire up the grill and pair your beer with good food and better company.
Share your toast on social media and tag @stoneysbeer to celebrate with us.
And always drink responsibly.
Why It Matters to Stoney’s
At Stoney’s Brewing Company, we’ve been part of Pennsylvania’s beer tradition for generations. Brewed in Western, PA and rooted in working-class pride, our beer has always stood for authenticity, simplicity, and quality.
As of this post, we’re proud to say that Stoney’s Beer is also making its way into West Virginia. The same great taste that built its reputation in Pennsylvania is now finding new fans across state lines. To us, National Beer Day isn’t just about beer—it’s about honoring where we came from and where we’re headed.
